Separating the Teeth

Let me start by saying congratulations on making the decision to get braces! Getting spacers is the first step in getting your braces.

The spacers are small elastics that are placed between your teeth to make room for the molar bands. Your teeth will become sore for a few days. In the meantime, try not to become discouraged!

Be very careful about what you eat and avoid tough and chewy items. Continue to brush your teeth regularly. You must also continue flossing between each tooth except where there are spacers.

It is important that the spacers stay in place until your next appointment. The spacers can fall out if you use your tongue or fingers to play with them. They can also fall out by chewing gum and eating sticky foods.

If the spacers are accidentally swallowed, do not be concerned for they are harmless. If your spacers should fall out, please call our office. We may need to replace them prior to your next appointment.

I want to wish you the best of luck with this important first step toward your new smile. If you have any questions about your spacers, please do not hesitate to call.
