Removable Expander

The removable expander is a special device used to widen the upper or lower arch. By widening the arches:
  • You will have a more attractive smile
  • You will have a better bite
  • You will have room for crowded teeth to align better

The upper arch is usually expanded enough in 6 months or less. Expanders remain in the mouth for 6-12 months while new bone is generating in the expanded mouth. Later on in the retention phase you may need to wear your expander only at night.

INSTRUCTIONS:

Please activate according to the doctor’s instructions.
Wear the appliance all the time, except while eating. After 6-12 months you may need to wear your expander only at night.

Please activate the appliance. Closely follow the schedule and instructions given.

Children under the age of 12 should not activate the appliance by themselves and will need help from an adult

Be regular! It is important not to rush or delay the activation of the appliance.
Your mouth may be watery and you may have slight difficulty in your speech for the first few days.

Don’t eat when wearing the appliance, unless the doctor approves doing so. If the doctor permits you to eat while wearing the appliance, avoid foods that are very hard and sticky because they can pull the appliance or break it.

Keep your appliance clean. Take it out after you eat to brush.

The procedure is not painful, although there may be some initial discomfort and some feeling of pressure as the arch expands and from attempting to eat with it. Usually, any over the counter pain reliever will effectively relieve any discomfort. If it does not, call the office so we can check the appliance.
